For those of you Surface fans out there who love to use your Surface in airport lobbies, cafés and anywhere in between, you know how great Surface is for people on-the-go. But when you come back to your home or work office, many of us want to easily connect to our monitors, external mice and keyboards, and any other accessory that can turn your Surface into a full-blown desktop workstation. We’ve recently made that super easy with the introduction of our new Surface Dock. To celebrate we’re taking a closer look at five ways Surface Dock makes your Surface even more awesome.
- Use this method: Mirror the Surface Hub's display on another device. Video Out: Present another device's display on the Surface Hub screen and interact with both the device's content and the built-in Surface Hub experience. Guest Mode: Power the Surface Hub from an external Windows 10 PC, turning off the embedded computer of the Surface Hub.
- You can use one external monitor to keep the focus on your code and use the other monitor to handle any open documentation, emulator or apps you’re testing. You can still use the great PixelSense display on the Surface itself as a third screen for team communications, e-mail, web browsing, etc.
- Surface Dock makes you a multi-tasking hero. With 2 miniDisplayPorts (mDP), you can now have 3 screens of real estate to be a productivity master. Crunch your numbers in Excel, check your emails in Outlook, take notes in OneNote, and Skype into a conference call – all without having to switch screens.
I personally use my Surface Dock at work to connect my Surface Book to two UHD monitors (3840 x 2160 @30Hz), Sculpt Ergonomic keyboard and mouse, Ethernet cable and external hard-drive. The USB 3.0 ports make transferring files a breeze, as the data transfer rates are up to 10x faster than on USB 2.0 ports.
The Mac being used as the source for the display can’t make use of any of the display iMac's features, including the built-in iSight camera. Target Display Mode can be helpful in many situations, but it's not a full-time substitute for having a dedicated display for another Mac.
Or at home, I connect my printer, 1 external monitor, speakers, and phone to my Surface Dock so I can work and play. Each USB port on the Surface Dock has 7.5W of charging power, so my cell phone and other accessories can charge faster. I can connect my TV through a miniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter when I want to watch TV or movies on a big screen. I also love the fact that it has an audio jack for my headphones or speakers, instantly transforming my home office into an entertainment center.

You can make all of your displays mirror each other, or extend your workspace with different apps and windows on each display. If you use an external display with your Mac notebook, you can also use closed-display mode.
Check your requirements
- Check the ports on your Mac to find out whether you need an adapter.
- Check how many displays your Mac supports: Choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click Support, then click Specifications. On the webpage that appears, the number of displays your Mac supports appears under Video Support.
Use extended desktop mode
Maximize your workspace with extended desktop mode, which lets you enjoy full-screen apps and windows on each monitor. Then, use Mission Control to organize apps and windows across your displays. If your Dock is on the bottom of your screen, it appears on any of your displays when you move your pointer to the bottom edge of your display.

- Make sure that your external display is turned on and connected to your Mac.
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Displays.
- Click the Arrangement tab.
- Make sure that the Mirror Displays checkbox isn’t selected.
Arrange your displays or change your primary display
So that you can move apps and windows across your displays in one continuous motion, arrange your displays to match the setup on your desk. You can also change your primary display, which is where your desktop icons and app windows first appear.
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Displays.
- Click the Arrangement tab.
- To change the position of a display, drag it to the desired position. A red border appears around the display as it's moved.
- To set a different display as the primary display, drag the menu bar to the other display.

Use video mirroring
With video mirroring, all of your displays show the same apps and windows.
Turn on video mirroring
- Make sure that your external display is turned on and connected to your Mac.
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click the Arrangement tab.
- Make sure that the Mirror Displays checkbox is selected.
Use AirPlay
With Apple TV, you can mirror the entire display of your Mac to your TV, or use your TV as a separate display. To turn on AirPlay, follow these steps:
- Make sure that your TV is turned on.
- Choose in the menu bar, then choose your Apple TV. If an AirPlay passcode appears on your TV screen, enter the passcode on your Mac.
- Mirror your display or use your TV as a separate display:
- To mirror your display, choose , then choose Mirror Built-in Display.
- To use your TV as a separate display, choose , then choose Use As Separate Display.
- To turn off AirPlay, choose , then choose Turn AirPlay Off.

If you don't see in the menu bar, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then select the 'Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available' checkbox.
